There is hardly a better way to experience a country than seeing it from a bicycle. Srilanka is small but diverse, and that makes bicycling apter. Rivers and lakes, forests and farmlands, hills and valleys will give us company as we soak into the beauty of this tropical country. While the terrain is breathtaking, it is also going to test our legs as well as we are going to be riding through the central highlands.

Detailed Itinerary

16th Dec 2017 - Day 1 Colombo to Chilaw / 70 km

Starting from Sri Lanka’s capital city Colombo, we ride north riding up the old coast road to Negombo for a snack stop. Negombo is a lively beach town with plenty of bars and beach restaurants to choose from. We will then be riding along the old coast road, one of the few that actually follow the sea to Chilaw. Chilaw is an old fishing port. We stay the night in a coastal resort. The area is famous for coconuts and crabs, and when combined, makes a delicious crab curry (part of the welcome dinner hosted by The Bike Affair in the open-air restaurant.

17th Dec 2017 - Day 2 Chilaw to Anuradhapura/ 140 km

Riding from the hotel, we pass through the main city before getting out on some quiet country roads. After 100km, we stop for a roadside picnic lunch. Refueled we ride another 35km to Anudradhapura, the 1 st Capital of Sri Lanka. Dating from the 4th century BC. Anuradhapura’s kings ruled the land for 1300 years until 993AD when it was abandoned after the Chola army from South
India invaded and sacked the city. In the evening, we will visit the Sacred Bodhi tree, a sapping from the original tree under which Buddha found enlightenment. It is best viewed at sunset when the pilgrims light “pahannas,” little clay lamps and incense sticks, giving it a heady atmosphere.

18th Dec 2017 Day 3 - Anuradhapura– Ridigama/119 km.

Early morning we cycle tour the ancient city, dotted with temples and stupas of the great kingdom, which are some of the oldest and largest Buddhist monuments in Asia. During this period, Anuradhapura remained one of the most stable and durable centers of political power and urban life in South Asia. After touring the ruins we cycle on quiet country roads, with a gradual ascent to Ridigama, a quiet village at the bottom of the western hills. Ridigama is also famous for the Buddhist
cave temple.

19th Dec 2017 Day 4 - Ridigama to Kandy / 49 km

Riding from the hotel, the road rises up through the spice growing region of Sri Lanka, with some short steep sections ( about 10 km is the main climb) before we descend into Kandy the cultural and spiritual capital of the hill country. Arriving for lunch the rest of the day is free to explore the town. A must
see is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

20th Dec 2017 Day 5- Kandy – Nuwara Eliya/ 99km

One of the most scenic but challenging rides in Sri Lanka .Taking the old B39 road, our first tea stops is Hanguranketa, a small village with an ancient temple. The magnificent wall paintings date from the Kandyan period. From here we climb up through terraced paddy fields to Walpane, our 2nd lunch stop. Refueled, we enter the high grown tea region reputed to produce the finest teas in the world, riding all the way to our hotel close to the old race course in the town. It is worth taking a stop at Pedros Tea Factory ( 3 km before the town centre) which runs a factory tour followed by sometea tasting.

21st Dec 2017 Day 6 - Nuwara Elliya - Ella - 58 km/Optional rest day(transfer by bus)

The early morning is free to visit the town before setting off towards Ella on an undulating (1000m) descent. Although a shorter ride, we still have some climbing once we pass our first tea stop at Welimada. Scenic mountain roads take us to Bandawella a small hill station centered around the town’s cricket pitch. The ride ends with a late lunch at our hotel in Ella, leaving the rest of afternoon free to wander around town, known for its grand view that extends all the way to the shimming South coast. Today we descend 2000m but we still have to climb 1110m!

22nd Dec 2017 Day 7 - Ella - Udawalawa National Park/110 km

Riding down the famous Ella gap, we descend another 1000m to the plains below as we leave the breathtaking scenery of Uva Province for the gentle rolling hills of the dry zone. Part of the ride is along the border of Uda Walawe National park, (known for its herds of elephants) to our overnight accommodation close to the park entrance. There is the chance of an optional safari approx. US$17pp plus jeep hire US$35 for up to 6 persons

23rd Dec 2017 Day 8 – Udawalawa - Merissa / 97 km.

We set off to complete our journey along good roads with vast expanses of green paddy fields on each side. The simplicity of rural life is showcased as we cycle towards the south coast ending the ride att Merissa , one of the best beaches in southern srilanka. With a ceremonial dip in the India Ocean with our front tires we conclude our road ride with a few beers . We then take a ride to the Galle Fort where we spend the evening exploring the 17th century dutch
fortress and enjoying a celebration dinner

Is it suitable for new rides?
No. The average distance per day is close to 100, and there are a couple of days with some serious climbing.

How do I know if i can do it ?
If you can done a brevet, or done back to back centuries before, or ridden on one of our previous tours, you should be good. If you finish a 100 km ride in less than 5 hour ( icnluding your breaks), you should be good.

Are there lot of climbing?
The central part of sri lanka is the highland, and we cut through the central highland. So while there are no big hills on the first 3 days and the last 2 days, the remaining 3 days are pretty hilly

How are the road conditions ?
Near perfect. About 90-95 % of the road is very good. The remaining 5-10% is moderate to bad 

What kind of bikes are best suited and what's the preferred tyre size?
Road bikes or gravel bikes. Recommended tyre size is 700x28/30

Are we going to have any time for sightseeing ?
Yes, out of 8 days, 3 days are under 70, which means we will be finishing off these 3 days by lunch time. For most of the other days, we will be finishing the ride by before 4 pm or earlier, which will give us atleast some time to explore the local attractions. Some of the options will include Kandy Sacred tooth temple visit, a visit to Anuradhapura old city, stop overs for tea factory tours and tea tasting at nuwara Elliya, some short trek options at Ella, an optional Udawalawa elephant sanctuary, and exploring the galle fort by feet.

How do I get back to Colombo/airport from the last point , Galle?
Post dinner, there will be a vehicle's arranged to transport the riders and their bikes back to colombo. This is included in the tour feesTo join the ride on 16th, I would be reaching colombo on 15th. 

Is the accommodation of 15th Included in tour fees?
No. the Tour starts from 16th, so we have covered accommodation from 16th to 22nd. However, we can help you book accommodation in colombo on 15th.

Is 23rd accommodation included in the tour cost?

What meals are covered during the tour?
Breakfast, light lunch and dinner

I am a vegetarian. Are there going to be sufficient options for me?

What kind of accommodation is provided for the Tour?
We have tried to stick to 3-star quality accommodation for this trip. There is option of single sharing, double sharing and triple sharing depending on what you choose.

How can I get Srilanka Visa?
Apply Online. You will receive it in 2 days over email.

I want to get my family along. Can they be accommodated and how much would be the cost?

Yes, but we can only accommodate a handful of non riders as some of the hotels we have booked may not have additional rooms available at this point of time. So please act quick. Non rider’s rate : Rs 35,000 for Double sharing. This includes Room, breakfast and dinner only. Lunch is not included.
